Quarter scored celebrating the Eight bells

29/7/2025

On Tuesday 29th July 2025 a quarter peal of 1296 Cambridge Surprise Minor was rung in 39 mins
Treble Alesha Wheaver
2nd Scott Wheaver
3rd Amber Wheaver
4th Michael Chester (C)
5th Xavier D Howell
Tenor Quentin D Howell

First quarter on a mini ring 1,3,5
First Cambridge - 5
This is the first quarter on the bells in the new situation and celebrates 25 years since the projects conception. Only the third and fourth are actually the same bells from the previous Whitacre Campanile in the same position with the current third being the former treble. All other bells are new to the ring since the previous Whitacre Campanile quarter in 2004.

First ring of Eight
Immediately after this quarter the first ring of all eight was achieved with Scott Wheaver (1), Helen Howell (2), Alesha Wheaver (3), Amber Wheaver (4), Michael Chester (5), Quentin Howell (6&7), Xavier Howell (8) after a new treble and second were hung with new clappers earlier in the week.

New bells hung

26/7/2025

The second bell has been hung on its wheel for some time but the clapper never properly made to work as there seemed little point with no proper treble. Yet another look through the numerous bells one collects for these projects has now found a small bell which is just about suitable for the treble even if it might be a semi tone too high. It sort of sounds right so progress is being made to hang and fit a clapper. At 8 ½ oz the bell is so small I have to rethink how the clapper might actually work and fit inside such a small bell and if it needs to be hung out on a stem much nearer the outer edge like the others? However for now it does finally make the ring a set of eight.

With the quarter booked for next week have also been all over the bells and the frame to make sure nothing is loose. Tightened up a few wheels to the headstocks and made sure the clappers function and are oiled. Also modified the flight on the tenor very slightly increasing it weight to make the clapper hit the bell to make a little more noise as the backstroke particularly was almost inaudible.

Wheel repair

26/7/2025

Finally got around to gluing properly the damaged rim to the tenor wheel which was dropped a while ago when the move happened and needed proper repair. Clamped up and then adjusted all the tail ends of the new ropes so that they were correct and ready for the planned quarter peal.
